More Gto
One morning I hike to the light house (yes, there is a lighthouse in the middle of Mexico. It was built b/c Gto was hard to find before the means of communication we have today b/c it’s surrounded/hidden by mountains.) After I left, I thought I probably should have taken someone w/ me that knew that way, but it turned out ok. When I started up the mountain I heard a woman talking about me, saying I didn’t know Spanish. So I asked her (in Spanish) how to get up to the lighthouse. She told me to “go up this way” and then “follow the signs” in Spanish, but I wished she’d given me a little more
specifics. I’ve heard many people say that often, Mexicans here will give you directions somewhere, even if they don’t know where you’re going, to keep from having to say the don’t know. That probably wasn’t the case here, (although they lady looked too old to be hiking anymore), but it took me a good 20 minutes to find a trail, and then it was still a very steep one at that! (I ended up climbing down a different way because it was so very steep.) At the top, I snapped a few shots of myself, and enjoyed the view for a while. There was a family with two young children there, too, and that’s how I figured there must be an easier way down if these kids made it up here! When I got back down, I was really thirsty for something sweet, so I bought some “agua de horchatta,” a sweet water made from rice. I felt pretty cool for buying it on the street and drinking it out of a bag like so many Mexicans do.
Sometimes it's frustrating when a how-ever-many-pound cow can climb up these "cerros" or hills with such ease. (It's pretty hard for me sometimes...) How do they do this with their slick hooves and "high pound-age?"
This is a tiny little flower I took a picture of on my way down (I used my "macro mode" again with my camara. :) Actually, I took lots of pictures of flowers that day.
This is the jacaranda tree. I was excited to find that out because our hotel in Lima, Peru was named.
How fun to make that connection! The jacaranda tree is beautiful (the light here doesn't really bring out the brilliant color), BUT I think it is the guilty one for my extremely stuffy nose!
